
After a ride, the useful question is simple: can I leave this open overnight, or do I need a more deliberate routine? The answer depends on how wet the liner is, how much time you have before the next ride, room humidity, and what the helmet manufacturer allows. It is not a race to add more heat.
When is open-air drying enough?

For a lightly sweaty helmet with a full night in a dry, ventilated room, ordinary airflow is often the sensible default. If rain, washing, or a short turnaround leaves deeper padding cool or clammy, the job becomes moisture management: towel-press excess water, open the helmet, and use only a method compatible with the helmet and liner.
Why heat is not the default answer
Helmet makers distinguish washable comfort parts from the impact-absorbing liner, shell, adhesives, and trim. Their care guidance matters more than a generic drying hack. SHOEI says interior parts should be completely dry before reassembly and cautions that EPS is not heat-proof. AGV also advises air-drying the liner fully away from heat. So a hair dryer, heater, direct sun, clothes dryer, or improvised high-heat setup is a poor default unless the maker of your specific helmet permits it.
Airflow and heat are not the same thing. The goal is to let moisture leave the padding without creating a hot spot or assuming every part has the same material limits. When in doubt, follow the manual for your model.

A safe open-air routine
- Get the helmet out of closed storage. A damp helmet sealed in a bag has little chance to dry well.
- Open what is designed to open. Raise the visor and open vents when appropriate for your helmet.
- Check liner instructions before removing anything. Do not pull fixed pads, electronics, or glued components just to speed things up.
- Press, do not wring. A clean towel can remove surface moisture from removable pads without twisting foam or stressing seams.
- Let it dry in a shaded, ventilated place. Keep it away from direct high heat, sunlight, fuel, solvents, and household heaters.
- Check deeper padding. The surface can feel dry while the centre remains cool or damp.

When controlled airflow is worth considering
Consider a dedicated drying setup when the problem is repeatability: you commute most days, get caught in rain late in the day, wash pads with little time before the next ride, or also need to dry compatible gloves or boots. The benefit is a routine you can repeat, not a guarantee that any helmet will dry in a fixed number of minutes.

Three situations that need different answers
Odor after a dry ride

Rain-damp helmet
Do not trap it in a backpack, pannier, or helmet bag. Open the helmet in a dry indoor location, towel-press reachable moisture, and give the liner enough airflow. Follow separate care instructions for a visor, intercom, or other equipment.
Washed pads
Reinstalling slightly damp pads can bring the same odor problem back. Let all parts dry completely, check snaps and strap routing, and only then reassemble. A dryer is never a reason to ignore washing or heat limits in the helmet manual.

What neither method can fix
Neither open air nor a dryer repairs damaged EPS foam, degraded padding, broken snaps, failed adhesives, or a helmet that has suffered an impact. Neither method sterilizes a helmet or replaces washing when washing is needed. Consult the helmet manufacturer, a dealer, or a qualified service provider if you find damage, persistent odor after proper care, or a component you are not sure how to remove.
Bottom line
Choose open-air drying when a helmet is lightly damp and you have a full drying window. Choose controlled airflow only when a compatible helmet and a repeatable, short-turnaround routine make it useful. In both cases, follow the helmet manual, avoid high heat, clean residue when needed, and do not store the helmet until the interior is fully dry.
